Try walking on the heap of fallen leaves
strewn around , dry and brown and listen
the crisp sound  as you trample them .
Broken promises , do they have a sound,
is it necessary that everybody cries in pain  ?
The vagrant lying crumpled on the streets ,
what could he possibly hear on a cold night
as he wakes from a nightmare .
Living on the edge of darkness
just a slip away from  murky  shadows
Into the obscurity of gloomy oblivion .
Keep on waiting for the promised train
that will transport him  away
from all this reasons of misery , for once and all .
At a distance far away ;  all sounds fade ,
even the loud wails of tormented souls .
Drifting like smoke in  the vast expanse of space
scattered remains of silent unhappiness .

It was a season of spring for me
when you walked  into  my life.
I waited for you in this lovely garden
to watch the flowers bloom.

Small Wonders

The journey of the enlightened soul can be beyond the boundaries of space and the limits of time .
The best gift one can get is when life is touched by the presence of somebody who can understand what you want to say without any compulsion or commitment. This exchange between souls can transcend the boundaries of space and the limits of time.

To feel the power of strong infatuation to a person and then get a positive response in a frank acceptance of attraction from the other side can make the day . Well , it can also spoil your night as you lay awake thinking about this feeling of something new happening . Something strange and unauthorised but probably true. But then, at the same time , you wonder whether you should carry it through .

Everything was fine till she opened her heart . It was so sudden , though they both sensed it long back that the chemistry between them was something different . But he never thought that she would be the first one to admit . Her boldness was a pleasant surprise for him and made him glow with desire . He could feel the warm blush spreading across his face as he realised that she was , indeed someone whom fate has ordained .

He was also happy with her frank acceptance because left to himself , he probably would have kept his feelings bottled within himself . But now he knew that it will not be a mistake to have her in his dreams . In the darkness of night he closed his eyes , dreaming about her , the lovely smile on her face with the twinkling eyes and the luscious lips and as a sense of warmth engulfed him , he fell asleep.

The West Bengal government should not pussyfoot about containng the fundamental fringe which has raised its ugly head in Malda and other parts of the state. Political expediency and vote bank calculations by the TMC supremo may assure her of a win in the assembly elections bit do irreparable damage to the society.
And how can a group of people be allowed to obstruct the singing of national anthem. They should be imediately put under custody. Sometimes the government and political leaders overestimate the strength of law breakers in the name of communal harmony. This only adds up to their strength. And thereafter the situation reaches a point of no return. Therefore it is necessary to take swift action to ensure law and order. Lawbreakers should be treated as criminals and not on the basis of their political or religious affiliations. Let us not forget how the erstwhile state of Bengal faced the scourge of riots in the pre partition era.

Secularism is under threat from fundamentalists from all religions and being seen as a compromised philosophy. But it is always forgotten that secularism means not siding with a particular religion. It means delinking religion from public life and governmental and political decisions. History teaches us lessons. Bur we do not care to pay heed to them. And therefore history repeats itself. Sad but that is how low level politics destroys a society.

Whenever there is a terrorist attack , a surge of  nationalism and patriotism engulfs the whole nation . This is a very valid and expected reaction . People are entitled to show their feelings for the nation and be proud of it. Further the lives lost by security personnel and common citizen in thwarting such attacks are also worth to be mourned as martyrs. These are all spontaneous reactions and the grief acts as a cementing force to bind the people together. Therefore , the spirit of this solidarity should be respected and the martyrdom requires to be saluted. There can not be a second opinion about it.

But what surely can not and should not be allowed is the tendency to use this groundswell of patriotism by the rulers to hide their inadequacies, inefficiencies and misjudgements . Politics is the art of riding public sentiments , no doubt, but when politicians demand that the citizens have to stand by the government  and support the steps taken by the government without criticism , then there remains  no doubt that something is amiss and such exhortations are being made to cover the tracks.

The problem is compounded when the politicians , now in power,  forget their own reaction to such emergencies in the past , when they warmed the opposition benches. The sheer hypocrisy and the gall in expecting that everybody should fall in line only because the chosen one is now on the ruler's seat is downright obnoxious and deserves to be condemned even more than the  valid criticisms to the governmental response.

Bringing in the dignity and honour of the armed forces and using the corpses of martyred soldiers to generate emotional waves is another common practice by the politicians in power . This actually harps on the feeling of guilt on the general population - See you are enjoying life while these brave men are laying down theirs. It is true no doubt that the blood of the soldier is a huge debt on the nation but along with that we also have to appreciate the fact that as in a family, club, office , society or any other collective organisation, somebody has to do it if there is a job to be done. Instead of  shedding tears only , we should look towards minimising such loss of lives by learning lessons from each and every experience.  Here comes that uncomfortable question  - "Are we learning the lessons and following them ?"

Coming back to the subject of  patriotism , everybody must love his or her country, but should not be so blind as to ignore the flaws or the challenges hidden  behind the facade of loyalty to the nation.  A true patriot is (s)he who does not deny or minimise  the inadequacies or inefficiencies of the system but strives to improve things. The love for the country motivates the patriot to make his country a better place to live. Often  patriotism is confused with the blind loyalty of a nationalist, but there is a significant difference between the two.

The nationalist thrives on the notions of cultural superiority, and tries to ignore or obliterate anything that casts a negative image of the country  even denying the sins of its past. Generally nationalists try to label critics as disloyal without understanding or examining the merits of their criticism itself.  History has enough examples which teach us that everything , even supposedly good things are only good in moderation.

There can be no two ways about patriotism .You're either patriotic or not. Otherwise you can either chose to move out of the country or wage a war against it. But being patriotic is inherently neither a virtue nor a vice because it can be used to support both good and bad things. And what we consider patriotic for ourselves may be in direct confrontation with the patriotism of people in other countries.

Oscar Wilde has famously said - "Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious"and much before him Samuel Johnson opined that "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrels ". Maybe even if we do not subscribe to such sweeping philosophy , we still can not deny that an overdose of patriotism is used to glorify the rulers and obfuscate the efforts to build a consensus on their shortcomings . A nation is made up of different facets like its history, geography, economics, politics, culture, language, weather , people, literature etc. which are intertwined with its destiny . We do not have the luxury to consider them selectively, in isolation, at the expense of others.

P.S. The jingoistic fervour that is displayed around Republic and Independence days  as also when India wins a cricket match or tournament are examples of such unnecessary ultra nationalistic nonsense.

By joking publicly about an old lady climbing 12 floors to lobby for an award , the Fatso proves that he is an indecent idiot and his upbringing is not gentlemanly .  Even if we agree that the lady has indeed done this , is it a matter of advertisement  to show the power a minister wields ? Such frivolous minded nitwits are better suited to comedy channels instead of the cabinet.

The chances of winning the Nobel Peace prize by the Sharif Badmash jodi jointly looks oh-so-difficult at this stage. Never mind buddy. Try to get it by propagating Yoga. Or you may try to get the Nobel for literature too. After all you are a creative genius in the field of fantasy.

Heard on the streets :
We live in a country where people know whether your fridge contains mutton or beef , but allow terrorists to move at will . #Irony
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thus spake Rajnath Singh on 20th June 2015 .

Knowledge is very dangerous. Those who are involved in terrorist activities, they are also 'gyaani'. They do not lack knowledge. There are many people in terrorism, they have knowledge too. But knowledge should be used in such a way that it becomes helpful to the society, not disastrous. Yoga will do the work of controlling that knowledge.

Why is it that the BJP suffer from a deep rooted complex to prove itself in respect of relation with Pakistan ? Even after the experience of the past NDA government they do not seem to have learned the lesson.
No body expected this government to build a cordial relation with Pakistan. Rather what was expected was that they would send a tough message against terrorism sponsored by our western neighbour and keep
the threat of terrorism under check by a strong deterrent policy. Probably the pressure from the USA and the lure of a Nobel Peace prize jointly with Mr. Sharif motivated our PM to try out something which was labelled as innovative. As a marketing gimmick it was a great show but fell flat on its face because it was not backed by real intent and the fake exuberance was apparent through the mask of bonhomie on both sides like coming together of two mafia ganglords for the purpose of business deal.

But then you can't make statesman out of a journeyman. Destiny may take people to places and place them at unexpected elevations but then somethings are not destined for some people. The narrative of Indo-Pakistan relations is a complex equation which can't be solved by simplifying personal outreach. All said and done Pakistan seems to be better for us as a known enemy rather than an unbecoming friend.

Some news reports has indicated that instead of acting constructively on the leads provided by the persons first abducted and then released by the suspected militants , the Punjab police thrashed the driver Mr Gopal brutally at Sadar Police station , Pathankot. Incidentally he himself served the police force for a long time . This may seem to be a very small incident which happens everyday in many of the police stations all over the country but actually points out to the real malady which faces the law and order system .

It is not possible altogether to stop people committing crimes and terrorist acts. But they can be prevented to a large extent if the law and order machinery is aware and awake to the needs of the security system .

Everybody is talking about how militants from across the borders are entering our country to carry out terrorist attacks and rightly blaming Pakistan for such outrage . But how many are bothered to know about the law and order situation in Punjab under the rule of the CM who has been glorified as the Indian Mandela . While we mourn the lives of Jawans killed in protecting our country , why do we keep our eyes closed to the alleged complicity of the Punjab police , BSF and a section of the top politicians with the drug business that has its link across the border.

The menace of drugs in Punjab is a well known fact . That the terrorists use this drug network to smuggle arms and people into the country is a corollary . Anybody with common sense will join the dots and come to the obvious conclusion. Still no one tries to sort out the problem . What does it indicate ? As long as the powerful people are compromised in their connection with nefarious activities , there is no way to stop such infiltrations and incursions .

The Army can fight the external threat and guard the borders , no doubt, but it is the police who is responsible to maintain the law and order and provide the basic intelligence from the ground level which can be the game changer. Small little nuggets of information can prevent bigger incidents or contain the damage to a large extent. But if the police believes that the only method of information gathering is the good old thrashing then there is alienation and chances of misinformation and confusion being spread . Also in this case the turn of events points out to the fact that either the whole of Punjab police turned a blind eye to the terror threat or some among them is in connivance with the terrorists. The other simple option to consider may be that they lived upto their reputation of Santa Banta style of functioning. But can be people be really so clumsy ? I can't believe it.

Imagine , a senior officer of the police , a SP is abducted along with two other persons at the dead of night and then found abandoned by the captors later . The dead body of a taxi driver is found from a spot near their abduction point. The vehicle remains stolen , The mobile phones are used for communication by the terrorists . The conversations are tracked . And all this happening at a place which is near the Pakistan border and after a terror alert already sounded . NSG commandos were sent to Pathankot at least 8 hrs before the terrorists started the attack. Are all these considered to be normal ? The stolen vehicle with its beacon is used by the terrorists to cross check posts where no information is passed about the abduction. Should we believe it ?

Something is very much wrong somewhere. You can smell it from the confusion in the reports made. People are now trying to cover their tracks but this is a case of intelligence failure at the grassroot level , no doubt about it. . From the response of the overall security system , it looked as if someone desperately wanted the terrorists to attack Pathankot airbase.Otherwise, how can you explain the failure to nab the terrorists when they knew their location, had so much of time and had so many military resources in the area to hunt them down ?

The system of Policing in the country is such that nobody would like to have any contact with the police whatsoever in their normal day to day life . The tales of brutality , corruption , political servility and foolishness of the police is so wide spread that the common citizen not only fears them but also have no trust on their intention. Nobody comes forward on their own to report petty offences which often hide bigger and more sinister crimes. Surprisingly , if asked everybody will admit that "The police knows everything " or "There is nothing that the police can't do" . Which means that even with the present state of affairs prevailing , there is a lot of improvement that can be done.

There are some very intelligent minds that have joined the police and we should not tar the whole force with the same brush. But the fact remains that the qualifications , skills, recruitment, training, salary and job conditions of an average policeman are all contributory factors to their collective incompetence , everywhere.

Police is a state subject and therefore every state has its own jurisdiction over its police force . But the need of the hour is to have widespread reforms in the police service and some uniformity in the service conditions all over the country. The old colonial style of police system has outlived its utility . It was a system devised to repress people on behalf of the British master . What we need now is a smart , agile , intelligent and perceptive police force to deal with the present day law and order problems .That will not only help the prevention of many crimes like rape, murders , frauds , riots etc. but also be the first line of defence against terrorists and militants .
