Random thoughts 01112016

RandomThoughts   Chetan Bhagat is considered to be the most successful Indian writer in English , in terms of his earnings, popularity and Twitter followers . I wonder how many of his followers on twitter may be knowing the name of the first novel in English written by an Indian  and the name of the writer ? And how many of us will even be interested in knowing that . After all history has never been our strong point. More so with the frequent rewriting with myths and fables.

Well, for those who do not know or do not remember - the book is "Rajmohan's wife" and the wrier of this novel is none other than Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. Yes the same person who gave us the Vande Mataram song and Ananda Math the novel. This novel was serialised in a magazine in the year 1864  and published much later in 1935. This was also the first novel written by Bankim Chandra . Now , that is really interesting . So he too, like Michael Madhusudan Dutt, tried to first try out his hand in English, rather than in Bengali.

To keep the historical context in mind, India's first train ran from Bombay to Thane in 1853, the Gadar or Sepoy mutiny  happened in 1857 and Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 . The author himself died in 1894 .
